I\u2019m coining the term, attunology<\/em><\/strong>, because it appears we need such a word in English, and we certainly need such a focus in Christianity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etymology:<\/strong> Coined from attun(e)<\/em> (Middle English attonen<\/em>, from ad-<\/em> + ton<\/em> tone, signaling alignment to a pitch or frequency) + -ology<\/em> (Greek -logia<\/em>, from logos<\/em>, study, discourse, or underlying reason).

1. The systematic study and conscious practice of mutual resonance, relational alignment, and receptive awareness between distinct beings, whether human, animal, or divine.
2. The methodology of tracking, understanding, and cultivating harmonious connection across human, animal, or divine systems.
3. In General Theology:<\/strong><\/em><\/mark> <\/mark>The study of the personal disposition, attitudes, awareness, and behaviors intended by the Creator for His followers in relationship a)<\/strong><\/em> <\/mark>with Him, b)<\/strong><\/em><\/mark> with his \u201choly angels\u201d (as opposed to the rebel angels), c)<\/mark><\/strong><\/em> with his authorized apostles and prophets, d)<\/mark><\/strong> <\/mark><\/em>with other believing humans, e)<\/mark> <\/em><\/strong>with non-believing humans, f)<\/mark><\/strong><\/em> with animals, and, not least importantly, g)<\/mark><\/strong><\/em> within oneself. (This includes the inner landscape of one\u2019s thoughts, emotions, intentions, desires, attitudes, convictions, and behaviors, as well as the somatic connections between these internal realities and the physical body, as addressed in <\/em>Somatic Internal Family Systems and other psychological modalities),<\/em> h)<\/mark><\/strong><\/em> and with truth\/reality itself, showing a vulnerability and accommodating spirit toward what actually exists, as opposed to one\u2019s own perceptions, wishes, opinions, or biases about it. (This latter is the core of Jack Pelham\u2019s philosophy of Reality-Based Thinking.)

Attunology<\/em> applies particularly to a spirit of aware, respectful, and willingly accommodating attunement<\/em><\/strong> and unity, proceeding from God\u2019s design for His creation.

Pronunciation Note:<\/strong> The primary entry (\\ \u0259- \\<\/code> or \u201cuh-\u201c) flows naturally into everyday speech, while the alternate entry (\\ \u0103- \\<\/code> or short \u201ca\u201d as in action<\/em>) gives the prefix an active, focused emphasis when introducing the term formally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTE TO THE READER: I just want you to know where this article is headed. I\u2019m going to show you a few passages of scripture at the end \u2015 passages that I believe should demonstrate (to those with \u201cears to hear\u201d) that this attunement between God and his Creation should be a compelling topic for us. But first, I\u2019ll write some short thoughts on what seems to be missing in the churches, and in Biblical Scholarship.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gaping Void of Attunement in Christian Circles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In recent decades the Barna Group<\/a> has famously reported the troubling fact that it is statistically difficult to differentiate the churched from the unchurched when considering their life behaviors. And it\u2019s not only a matter of statistics, but of common experience<\/em><\/strong> in the churches, where one regularly hears members bemoaning the sad state of the churches, whether it\u2019s spoken of as \u201cthe remnant vs. the compromised church,\u201d \u201cthe falling away,\u201d or as a lament over the loss of reverence or of doctrinal purity. It\u2019s something of an \u201celephant in the room\u201d, or even an \u201copen secret\u201d that so many in Christianity simply don\u2019t live highly attuned to God, Jesus, and the principles they have promoted. That is, we all know it (or should<\/em><\/strong> know it) but the fact doesn\u2019t seem to be treated with the alarm it deserves. The disattunement doesn\u2019t seem to be the five-alarm fire it ought to be. But then, who better to fail to sound the alarm than a disattuned church?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What many consider to be \u201cThe Church\u201d is a highly-fragmented community of organizations that are generally about the business of something in the general ballpark of being \u201cGod\u2019s family on Earth\u201d, or of doing God\u2019s business on Earth \u2015 and particularly the business of evangelism. \u201cThe Church\u201d may bring more and more in, but it\u2019s failing to produce droves of high-attuned, Jesus-following individuals who have done a very good job of this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something\u2019s missing. As it turns out, it\u2019s pretty easy to find out what pleases \u201cThe Church\u201d, but this doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that many among them will have a personal disposition of caring deeply how the Lord wants them to live. When one considers the broad view across all the various church cultures, that just doesn\u2019t seem to be all that strong a focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Bible Scholarship Isn\u2019t Helping Much: The Missing \u201c\u2026ology\u201d.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over time, a general scholarly nomenclature has developed for talking about what\u2019s in the scriptures, as well as about what the churches do. It is the fashion that each of these terms end with \u201c\u2026ology\u201d (as in \u201ctheology<\/em><\/strong>\u201c, for example. The ending simply means something like \u201cthe study of\u201d or \u201cthe science of\u201d \u2015 something in that ballpark. I asked Google\u2019s Gemini<\/em> to make me a short list of the most common of these terms used by Bible scholars, and here\u2019s the result:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
